Research on separated/single dads

Quantitative Summary

Qualitative Summary

This research on single fathers is part of a five year program that examines different cohorts of fathers and mothers. Examples include teenage fathers/mothers, step-fathers/mothers and older first time fathers/mothers. The survey, which is the same for all cohorts, consists of four standardised tests. They measure resilience, self-esteem, social support and life satisfaction. We are examining which of the first three factors - individually or as a group - most contributes to life satisfaction. At the end of the survey, which is completely anonymous, participants have the option of leaving their email address to be contacted for phase two of the research, which is one on one interviews. This interview basically has one question, which is “tell me your story”. So it goes, for example, “Every story has a beginning, a middle and an end; tell me your story as a single dad. How did you become a single dad, what happened next, and where are you now?” I find this method is great for participants because they get to tell me what is important to them. If participants choose not to do the interview, that’s fine. They can exit the survey and come back later (or not at all). The email addresses are separated from the interview responses.
